Admiral nurses are mental health nurses who work with the carer of a person with dementia, to identify their personal needs in their role as a carer and also access other services to help them care.

Admiral nurses provide a range of services to family carers, from help before diagnosis of an illness, to support beyond bereavement, including:

• a skilled, person-centred assessment of the needs of the person with dementia information about the nature of the illness and what services are available
• help for a carer to develop or improve skills in caring
• practical advice to help carers cope
• emotional support – short-term or ongoing, depending on need.
   

How to access the Admiral nurse service

Admiral nurses provide an open referral system where people can self-refer, or be referred by someone else who is concerned about them.

If someone else is referring a person to the Admiral nurse service, they must gain permission for the referral to be made.
